ASIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS
The biennial Asian Championships were first held in the outskirts of Manila in 1973. The 1977 event was cancelled by the IAAF due to political issues surrounding Israel's participation, and, consequently, were downgraded to title of "Asian Track and Field Meeting" from 1979-89. The People's Republic of China first competed in 1979.

ASIAN JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Asian Junior Track and Field Meeting was first held in 1986 and given full Championship status in 1992. The women's age group changed from under 19 to under 20 in 1988.

ASIAN GAMES
The multi-sport Asian Games, commonly referred to as the "Asiad", were first held in 1951. The People's Republic of China first competed, and Israel last competed, in 1974. The IAAF did not sanction the 1978 event due to the organisers refusal to invite the latter.

CENTRAL ASIAN GAMES
First held in 1995, the biennial Central Asian Games is a multi-sport event contested by 5 former states of the Soviet Union. The 2001 event was cancelled.

EAST ASIAN GAMES
The quadrennial East Asian Games is a multi-sport event first held in 1993. Australia competed as guests in 2001.

SOUTH ASIAN (FEDERATION) GAMES
The biennial South Asian Federation Games was a multi-sport event first held in 1984. The 1997 event was postponed until 1999, the 2001 event postponed several times, finally being staged in 2004 and the 2005 event postponed until 2006. From the latter date the event will be retitled the South Asian Games.

SOUTH EAST ASIAN GAMES
The biennial multi-sport South East Asian Peninsular Games were first held in 1959 and, with the admission of Indonesia and the Philippines, renamed the South East Asian Games in 1975.
