Bahrain's golden girl talks of her Asian Games experience in an interview with AIDAN PAYNE. (source: gulfdailynews )

BAHRAIN'S golden girl Ruqaya Al Ghasra is over the moon following her double success at the recently concluded Asian Games in Doha and termed it a dream come true. The 24-year-old won gold in the 200m and bronze in the 100m and believes her success will boost women's athletics in the Kingdom. Bahrain returned with an unprecedented 21 medals - seven gold, 10 silvers and four bronze - of which 14 came from track and field.  "I was glad to get the 100m heat out of the way and though the Uzbekistan girl (Guzel Khubbieva) pipped me into second place my main aim was to qualify for the final," recalled Ruqaya. Going into the final, Ruqaya said she felt more confident and relaxed despite carrying the hopes of a nation. Awaiting her in the final was Khubbieva, who has raced in a number of major finals, and Susanthika Jayasinghe Mannalage of Sri Lanka, a 200m bronze medallist at the Sydney Olympics. "I was up against two fine athletes and though I could only manage a bronze it was an emotional moment for me." Going into the 200 metres was much easier as Ruqaya and her Algerian coach Tadjine Noureddine had a chance to analyse the 100 metres race and change tactics. "I feel the 200 metres is a better event for me as it gives me a little more time to recover from a mistake," said Ruqaya. "After finishing with the fastest time in the heats, my confidence was really high and I knew this was my big chance to win a gold," added Ruqaya. read more >>

South Korean city Daegu officially submitted its Bid File to the IAAF in marking the start of campaigning to host the 13th World Athletics Championships in 2011.

The bid file outlines Daegu’s plans to provide a legacy for Asian athletics through a successful bid and to make the Championships the cleanest, most environmentally friendly and most athlete-friendly competition ever.

The mayor of Daegu city Kim Bum-il said, “The bid enjoys strong support from the central government and over 92 per cent of all Daegu citizens have expressed their overwhelming support for bid.”

The centrepiece of the Championships would be the World Cup Stadium on the outskirts of the city, which was used to host four matches during the FIFA World Cup in 2002.

Li set new Asian Record in High hurdles- Day six of AG
Doha, Dec 13,2006 - China’s Olympic champion and World record holder Liu Xiang capped an impressive year with a run-away victory in the men’s 110m Hurdles with a new Asian Games record timing of 13.15s in the sixth and final day of athletics action in the Khalifa Stadium at the 15th Asian Games on Tuesday (Dec 12).

In other athletics events, Kenyan-born James Kwalia Kurui won the men's 5,000 metres for host Qatar in 13:38.90 to top an all-Gulf state podium. Mucheru Salem Jawher of Bahrain, also originally from Kenya, took silver and Burundi-born Sultan Khamis Zaman of Qatar had bronze.

Thailand was a surprise winner in the men's 4x100-metre relay, while China won the women's race and Bahrain’s Maryam Yusuf Jamal completed a memorable middle distance double after winning the women’s 1500m.

India won their first gold of the athletics with a surprise win over the Chinese in the women’s 4x400m. But there was little surprise in the men’s 4x400m as Saudi Arabia’s Asian Games 400m champion Hamdan Odha Al-Bishi anchored his team to gold. The 25-year-old had been unlucky not to have come away with three medals having taken fourth place in the men’s 200m. Click here to read more>>

Asian Games- Day five
Doha, 12 Dec 2006: Kazakhstan’s Asian record holder (8725) Dmitriy Karpov, who had taken the silver medal four years ago and has since won bronze medals at the 2003 Worlds and the 2004 Olympics was the outstanding favourite in the men’s Decathlon, and his victory was never in doubt as he collected 8384 points.

Karpov took wins in the first three events - 100m, Long Jump, and Shot Put - to race 346 points ahead of his closest challenger P.J. Vinod of India. At the end, he won seven of his ten events over the two days and ended up 615 points ahead of Uzbekistan’s silver medallist Vitaliy Smirov, and South Korea’s Kim Kun-Woo who took bronze.

Patience pays dividends for Fei in women’s 5000m
China’s Xue Fei maybe only 17, but the manner in which she toyed with the best of Asia here she might have been running at the top level for many years.
Bahrain’s Nadia Ejjafini, formerly of Morocco, did the front running for more than eleven laps, and as the 26-year-old gradually upped the tempo of the race, the starting field of ten runners capitulated one by one with only six runners in the hunt at the end of the fifth lap. Japan’s Kayo Sugihara tried to share some of the leading responsibility with Ejjafini and their effort increased the pace some more and reduced the chasing pack down to three runners with Xue, India’s Jaisha Orchatteri, and her compatriot Preeja Sreedharan remaining in the hunt.
Sreedharan was the first to drop off with two laps of the race to go as the runners set themselves up for grand finish. With Ejjafini still leading, her opponents showed a lack of ambition to steal an early victory. Orchatteri was the first to kick at the bell, but Sugahara and Xue both closed in quickly to make the race a three-way battle to the finish. But both Sugahara and Orchatteri had little answer when Xue kicked with 50m to go. The 17-year-old turned back to check whether she had done enough to take victory and raced across the finish line in 15:40.12 Click here to read more>>

Zhang throws Asian Hammer Record - Asian Games, Day Two
Friday 8 December 2006
Doha, Qatar - Zhang Wenxiu’s spectacular Asian women's Hammer Throw victory was the highlight of the second day’s action of Athletics at the 15th Asian Games in Doha, Qatar, on Friday (8), during which four gold medals were decided – men’s & women’s Hammer Throws, men’s 3000m Steeplechase, and women’s 10,000m.

Tareq takes 3000m Steeplechase

The form and talent of Bahrain's Tareq Mubarak Salem, also known as Tareq Mubarak Taher, lived up to expectations with a well taken victory in the men’s 3000m Steeplechase.  The Games spirit might have been dampened by the withdrawal of two-time World champion Saif Saaeed Shaheen, the World record holder, but China’s Lin Xiangqian ensured that the remaining medal contenders would endure nervy moments. The 19-year-old Chinese runner (8:29.78 PB – 2006) stormed into a commanding lead in the first lap and looked comfortable throughout the race, although he only ended up doing the unofficial pace-making job for the event’s better known runners. With Xiangqian tiring, the Bahraini overtook the Chinese runner with 300m to go to win the race in 8:26.85, ahead of Qatar’s Gamal Belal Salem (8:29.10).  Click here to ream more>>
