HA NOI, June 29 — Viet Nam for the first time will host the Asian Junior Athletics Championships from July 1-4 at Ha Noi's My Dinh Stadium.

More than 650 officials and competitors from 37 countries and territories will take part in the tournament, marking a record number of participants. Powerhouses such as Japan, China, Kazakhstan and Thailand have registered to send their strongest juniors who will fight to secure titles in 44 events.

Vietnamese athletes have been training hard in preparation for months before the opening ceremony. However, despite being the host they currently seem likely to secure only one bronze medal. Tran Thi Hue Hoa is one medal hope in the women's high jump and triple jump events. Nguyen Thi Thuy in the women's 400m and Nguyen Thi Nga in the women's 400m hurdle are also possible medal winners. The trio, born between 1991-92, are new discoveries following recent HCM City and Ha Noi tournaments.

Apart from them, the host women's 4x400m team is expected to book a place in the final round. According to organisers at Sunday's briefing, preparations for the tournament are complete. 120 referees are ready to adjudicate the events which will also be under the supervision of world and continental athletic federations.

The tournament will start at 8am on Thursday with the walking and combined events. Viet Nam Television's VTV3, will offer live broadcasts and show the opening and closing ceremonies. — VNS
