Rabbani vaulted to glory as Iran tops at medal tally – Asian Indoor championships day-3
Tehran, Iran – 26 February 2010 : It was a low key contest, even at the continental level. However the three day Asian indoor meet held at Tehran’s Aftab-e-Enqelab Gymnasium served as a test field for those aspirants looking for higher glory at World Indoor Championships in Doha, which is less than two weeks away.

The final day’s proceedings on Friday (26) saw Qatar’s World and Olympic finalist in steeplechase, Kamal Ali Abubaker, clinched the top spot in metric mile. A Sudanese by birth, he brought his adopted country bronze medals in 1500m in both Asian Indoor Games and Championships earlier. A delighted Abubaker promised a better show at Doha.

In pole vault, Mohammad Mohsen Rabbani scaled 5.20m for the gold. The Iranian was fourth at the last Asian Games. Nikita Filippov of Kazakhstan was one step higher for silver from his third place position in the last edition of the championships.

Three meet records were bettered on the final day of competitions. Indian Bibin Mathew in 400m (47.81) besides two Chinese athletes Jiang Fan (7.75 secs in 60m hurdles) and Dong Bin (16.73m in triple jump) posted the new marks.

In triple jump the defending champion Roman Valiyev went down to third place.

In total five meet records were improved by men while Marina Aitova equaled her own mark in the women’s high jump on the opening day.

A double for Viktoriya
Kyrgyzstan’s Viktoriya Poliudina completes a distance double as she pocketed her second gold in 1500m on Friday morning. Earlier she won the 3000m on the opening day. Kazakh runner Verner Oksana was second in both the events.

Chinese triple jumper Liu Yanan delivered her indoor best 13.66m to win her pet event. She is already credited with a PB of 14.09 outdoors from her fifth place finish at Shanghai Golden Grand Prix last year.

Syrian quarter-miler Mounira Al-Saleh keep the much fancied Marina Maslyenko at bay in women’s 400m. The Kazakh was a silver medalist in Doha and kept the same position here too.

Indian women retained the relay gold although the time was much slower than the last edition at Doha (3:37.46), which remains as an Asian indoor record.

Hosts Iran tops the medal tally with 5 gold, an equal number of silver and 11 bronze medals, closely followed by China (4-4-2) and Qatar (4-3-0). Defending champion India finished fourth with 3 gold, 1 silver and 4 bronze medals. (Ram. Murali Krishnan)
Satyendra Kumar Singh brought shot put gold to India – Asian Indoor championships day-2
Tehran, Iran – 25 February 2010: Indian shot putter Satyendra Kumar Singh exhibited an enthralled athleticism as he set the iron ball out to a career best and meet record shattering 19.17m effort to win the gold on the second day of Asian Indoor championships at Tehran on Thursday (25). The 23-year-old athlete revealed that a training stint in Great Britain with former Olympic champion Tessa Sanderson  last year enabled him to improve his technique rapidly and he already set his goal towards a medal in the Commonwealth Games scheduled to held at New Delhi in October this year. It was indeed a good jump for Singh from his fifth place finish at Doha, two years ago. While the second Indian in the fray, Saurabh Vij, finished a distant fifth with a forgettable 17.22m, Kuwait’s Mohammad Mashari (18.78) and Iranian Hamid Reza Farahani (18.58) make it to a podium finish behind Singh.

Hundreds of fans joined together during the Iranian national anthem played when Hadi Sephrzad took the men’s heptathlon gold with 5292 points ahead of teammate Abdul Jalil (5054). Sephrzad was second at the last edition of the championships with 5515 points when India’s P.J. Vinod took the title in 5561. Vinod finished a poor third at Tehran. For records, India stood top of the medal tally in the last edition at Doha with 17 medals, five of them were gold. “We wish to preserve our best athletes for the continental Asian Games at Guangzhou and the Commonwealth Games at Delhi” informed an official when contacted. “India’s presence with 20 athletes at the Iranian capital includes many juniors and second-string athletes merely for the sake of experience than winning medals” he added further.

Defending champion Yaling beaten in long jump
Chen Yaling of China, the defending champion in women’s long with a performance of 6.39, fared badly as she finished second behind Kazakhstan’s Lyudmila Grankovskaya. The Kazakh gave her best of 5.98m for the title while Yaling could manage only a paltry 5.95 here. Indian Resmi Bose earned a bronze with a 5.93m jump.

Vietnamese Truong Thanh Hang, the multiple medalist in the biennial South East Asian Games and Asian Indoor Games at Hanoi in last November was an easy victor in 800m. Kyrgyzstan’s Tatyana Borisova, the former Asian 1500m champion and Asian Games medalist, took the silver on her indoor debut.

Roslinda Samsu, the upcoming Malaysian pole-vaulter who was second at the inaugural edition of the Asian indoor championships here in 2004 had won this time around with a modest 4m clearance. The event went on as a two-horse race as Kazakhstan’s Tatyana Turkova was the only other athlete to challenge the Malay vaulter here. (Ram. Murali Krishnan)
Rajabi shot put champion of Asian Indoor AthleticsKwalia and Aitova hog the limelight in Asian Indoor championships – day 1
Tehran, Iran – 24 February 2010 : The Asian Indoor championships returned to its birthplace (Tehran) after six years. The Iranian capital, which conducts the annual Fajr invitational indoor meet, had successfully organized the inaugural Asian indoors at Aftab-e-Enqelab Gymnasium in 2004.

Asia is the only other continent after Europe used to stage the continental indoor championships. As much as 300 athletes from 27 nations, including China and Japan, are taking part in the three day meet which begun on Wednesday (24).

Leyla-o-leyla
The hosts Iran have something to joy when their best bet Leyla Rajabi, the reigning Asian Indoor Games champion, got the shot put gold with a 17.32m heave. Rajabi, originally hails from Belarus and formerly known as Tatsiana Ilyushchanka, have credited with a personal best of 18.01m indoor (and 18.06 in outdoor) since 2006.
Two Chinese women, Asian junior champion Meng Qianqian who tossed the iron ball to 17.03 - her second best indoors - with training partner and World University Games bronze medalist Ma Qiao have occupied the next two spots in shot put.

Qatar’s James Kwalia, the World championship bronze medalist in 5000m at Berlin, showed his readiness to take the men’s line-up in next month’s Indoor Worlds at Doha as he took the gold in a hard fought 3000m race from countryman Rashed Essa Ismail. Kwalia, the Asian Indoor Games victor in Hanoi, won the race 7:57.73 to 7:57.77 from Ismail and thus sent a warning to everyone who aim for a medal in Doha. Ismail was a silver medalist in 10000m at last Asian Games and a specialist on road races.

Samuel Francis, the Asian record holder in 100m, ascertained his supremacy once again as he conquered the men’s 60m sprint with a 6.58 clocking. Local star Reza Gasemi piped Moubarak Al Harthi of Oman for the second place.  Japan opened its account in the championships through long jumper Rikiya Saruyama.
