About Asian Grand Prix

Mr. Suresh Kalmadi, M.P., President of AAA introduced the Asian Grand Prix in 2002. It started off in Hyderabad, and was also organized in Manila and Bangkok. It is now an annual feature in AAA calendar.

The idea of conducting an Asian Grand Prix athletic series was to provide athletes from Asian continent more competitive experience and exposure.

Although Asian GP series was first thought of in 1987, it was realised only in 2002 thanks to the initiative of the Mr. Suresh Kalmadi, President of the AAA, and because of his effort AGP series has sustained over the years.

Mr. Kalmadi has made Pune city as one of the permanent venues for the Asian GP series.

AGP venues over the years:

2002: Hyderabad, Bangkok and Manila
2003: Hyderabad, Colombo, Bangkok and Manila
2004: Songkhla, Colombo and Manila
2005: Sidoarjo, Singapore and Songkhla
2006: Bangkok, Bangalore and Pune
2007: Bangkok, Guwahati and Pune

AGP is now a part of prestigious IAAF World Athletics Tour 2007. Under this, athletes get an opportunity to attain the qualifying standard for World Championship Osaka 2007 as well as ranking points.

AGP has offered attractive cash awards for the winners. In 2007, more than US $150,000 will be distributed to the medal winners
